Getting Started

New to the server?  Here are a few tips to help you get started.

First off, explore the entire ice spawn building and READ ALL SIGNS.

  • Discovery Warps (Teleportation): If you go to the very top of the spawn building, you will see a stone plate on the ground with a couple of signs surrounding it.  This is a DW (or Discovery Warp) plate.  If you step on it, you will "discover" spawn.  Once you discover a plate, you can teleport back there at anytime with the command "/dw tp PlaceName".
    • Test it out with "/dw tp spawn".
    • You can also use the command "/dw list" to see what other plates there are to discover.
  • Maps: On the first floor, there is a large map showing spawn as well as 1000 blocks out in all four directions.  This could be a useful tool in helping you decide where you would like to venture out and what biomes are nearby to explore.  If you look on the second and third floor, you will see maps of villages, towns, cities, and independent tribes.  This may influence your decision to make a new town or join up with an existing one.
  • Town Offices: Spawn has several offices which will give you a taste of what kinds of villages, towns, and cities are currently up and established.  Joining an existing town could give you a leg up on your Minecraft experience.  Most towns will offer you food, building materials, and other benefits.  It's also a great way to make friends and keep your server experience fresh.
  • North/South/East/West Gates: These are the main roads.  Each established town or higher should have a road that connects to one of the main roads.  Follow these for a safe way out of the spawn building before you are tossed into the mob infested world.
Now that you're ready to venture out of spawn, you may consider joining a settlement, village, town, city, or metropolis.

Perks of Joining:

  • Newbie Packs: Some places offer perks for joining, such as newbie packs or starter packs.
  • Shared Resources: Most places have a type of community storage.  You can get a leg up on your building by sharing the materials discarded by more seasoned townies.
  • Neighbors: Minecraft can be so solitary!  The game can be more fun if you get to have players near by, watching their builds come into shape, and watching the town grow.
  • Community: You get to become part of a unique group. Maybe you all have similar tastes? Maybe you enjoy being around a group who likes building in the snow or who focuses on making medieval builds.
  • Creative Themes: Sometimes it's nice to get out of your creative bubble!  You may find a town with a gorgeous theme that you can't help but be apart of. Get out of your building rut and build with a new theme in mind.
  • Jobs: We've all experienced Minecraft boredom.  Being part of a town gives you the opportunity to pick up jobs and help with town projects!  Who knows, maybe the leader may even offer some payment for your handiwork.

If you don't see a settlement, village, town, or city that catches your fancy, you might consider striking out on your own.  Nearly everyone likes the idea of being the "boss" and having a fancy title in front of their name.  A lot of people join this server with the intention of running their own town, but not all of them are successful.
  • Things to consider:
    • How much time do you have to be active on this Minecraft server?
    • What do you have to offer new members who may want to join?
    • What rules are in place to help and protect your town members?
    • How is your town theme/idea different than other towns? What makes yours better?
    • Are you generally a likable person?
    • It's usually easier if you start with a buddy.  What support do you have?
  • Start Building: Make sure that you are at least 200 blocks away from an existing settlement/village/town/city/tribe.  There's no sense in having two towns right on top of each other -- make sure you are leaving yourself and your neighbors plenty of room to expand.
  • Advertise: It always helps to let the staff know your intentions to start a new town, that way they know to recommend you to newbies who may want to help.  A lot of advertising, though, will fall on you.
    • Approach new members as they join the server.  Kindness and helpfulness always go over well.
    • Give the forum topic a bump.  Make a nice pitch for your town, theme, and projects. Make your town the sole reason why people want to join the server.
    • Create a banner to be randomly displayed on the site.  Instructions HERE
    • Participate in weekly spotlights to get your town noticed.
    • Create a spin-off site for your town.  Send your link to Otterun and she will link it on this main site.
